Celebrating and learning about the Chinese Spring Festival

Clever, quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life.

The Year of The Rat

You probably know there are 12 Chinese zodiac animals used to represent years, 2020 is the Year of the Rat. Zodiac signs play an integral part in Chinese culture, and can be used to determine your fortune for the year, marriage compatibility, career fit, best times to have a baby, and so much more.

Blue Gum read the book Lanterns and Firecrackers together, learning about all the traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations. The story described how a wonderful banquet is prepared to share with family with lots of delicious food including fish, noodles, oranges and dumplings.

Other groups discovered The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. Would you like to make a rat mask of your own?
